Is CapCut safe?

From Is it safe?, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the CapCut video editing app. For other apps, see Is it safe?.

Safe to use with care: a mainstream ByteDance video editor with no regulator fines HARD could find; use official app stores and mind the licence over content you submit.

CapCut is a widely used, legitimate editor. Projects you don’t share stay private to your account, Google Play says it shares no data with other companies, and face information used for effects is deleted once the effect is applied.

The real risks are fake or “modded” downloads, phishing that pretends to be CapCut support, and a broad, permanent licence in its terms over content you submit.

CapCut is made by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. Its privacy policy says data is stored on servers in Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. The TikTok US joint venture says its data and security safeguards also cover CapCut in the US.[1][2][3][4]

The real risks

What CapCut itself says it collects, what regulators and courts have found, its security record and the scams that borrow its name. Each line links to the page it comes from.

What it collects

From CapCut’s own privacy policy:

  • The photos, videos, audio, templates and AI prompts you use, collected as you create or import them, whether or not you save or publish.[1]
  • Where faces and body parts appear in your footage, for effects and moderation. CapCut says it does not use this to identify you and deletes it once the effect is applied.[1]
  • The sound in your clips and the words spoken in them, for example when you use auto captions.[1]
  • Text and images on your clipboard, when you use features such as pasting or sharing to other apps.[1]
  • Approximate location from your SIM region and IP address; the policy does not mention precise location.[1]
  • Device details such as model, operating system and advertising identifiers, plus crash and performance logs.[1]
  • Purchase and payment details if you buy CapCut Pro or Cloud Space, handled through payment providers.[1]

App store label. Apple’s App Store label says CapCut uses identifiers to track you across other companies’ apps, and links contact info, your content, identifiers, usage and diagnostics to you. Google Play says it shares no data with other companies, encrypts data in transit and lets you ask for deletion.[4][5]

Regulators and courts

Fines, orders, investigations and lawsuits, newest first. A lawsuit is what the side bringing it alleges until a court decides.

WhenWhat happened
The US Supreme Court upheld the 2024 law that covers any app run directly or indirectly by ByteDance, which includes CapCut, unless its US operation is split from ByteDance.[6]

Changes that matter

  • : CapCut’s terms for users outside the US, updated 15 April 2026, grant a permanent, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use content you submit to run and develop the service, and to use your username and likeness, including in sponsored content; not in the EU or UK.[2]
  • : The new TikTok USDS Joint Venture said its US data protection and security safeguards also cover CapCut.[3]

What HARD couldn’t verify

Claims you may see elsewhere that HARD couldn’t confirm from a primary source on 7 Nov 2026, so they aren’t in the record above.

  • CapCut’s separate US Terms of Service could not be loaded, so claims about a 2025 US terms update covering your face, voice or likeness were not checked against the US text.
  • Claims that CapCut went offline in the US on 19 January 2025 and later returned could not be confirmed from a CapCut or government page in this check.
  • Whether US CapCut data has moved to Oracle’s cloud: the TikTok joint venture says its safeguards cover CapCut, but CapCut’s privacy policy still lists servers in Malaysia, Singapore and the US.
  • No primary source named specific fake CapCut download websites; CapCut warns about unofficial sites in general.
