Is Cash App safe?

From Is it safe?, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the Cash App payment app. For other apps, see Is it safe?.

Safe to use with care: Cash App is a real, regulated service, but payments are instant, usually can’t be cancelled, and there is no purchase protection when you pay people.

Cash App is a legitimate money app run by Block, Inc. It encrypts payments, monitors them for fraud, and its Zero Fraud Liability covers unauthorised Cash App Card charges you report within 60 days.

The real risk is scams. Payments between Cash App users are instant and usually can’t be cancelled, and Cash App offers no purchase protection for paying people. In 2025 and 2026 federal and state regulators ordered Block to pay hundreds of millions of US dollars over how it handled fraud, disputes and anti-money-laundering checks.

Cash App is run by Block, Inc., the company behind Square, from Oakland, California. Cash App is not a bank: its banking services and cards come from partner banks such as Sutton Bank and The Bancorp Bank.[1][2]

The real risks

What Cash App itself says it collects, what regulators and courts have found, its security record and the scams that borrow its name. Each line links to the page it comes from.

What it collects

From Cash App’s own privacy policy:

  • Identity details for verification: full address, date of birth, Social Security number or other government ID, and photos or face scans used to check it’s you.[3]
  • Payment details: when and where each payment happens, who paid whom, the description and amount, and the device and payment method used.[3]
  • Your phone contacts, if you choose to let Cash App upload them. You can stop sharing them in your settings at any time.[3]
  • Device and location data, including IP address, device model and identifiers, and possibly precise location, used for fraud checks, marketing and advertising.[3]
  • From 9 February 2026, shopping history, card transactions and app browsing may be used to show you ads for other brands; you can opt out under Account & Settings → Privacy.[3]
  • Details shown to people you pay: your name, $Cashtag, past transactions with them, when you joined and whether you’re in their contacts.[3]

App store label. Apple’s App Store label lists no data ‘used to track you’. Data ‘linked to you’ includes purchase history, physical address, user and device IDs, product interaction, payment and credit info, name, email, phone number, contacts and customer-support messages. The app is rated 13+.[4]

Regulators and courts

Fines, orders, investigations and lawsuits, newest first. A lawsuit is what the side bringing it alleges until a court decides.

WhenWhat happened
California’s Attorney General and 45 other state attorneys general announced a US$45 million settlement with Block. They alleged misleading safety claims, weak fraud controls and years without live phone support. Block must offer 24/7 support and honour the CFPB refund order.[5]
New York’s financial regulator (NYDFS) fined Block US$40 million over anti-money-laundering failures at Cash App, including weak customer checks, slow transaction monitoring and lax handling of high-risk bitcoin transactions. Block must hire an independent monitor.[6]
A US federal court in California gave final approval to a US$15 million class settlement over data incidents Block disclosed in April 2022 and October 2023 and its handling of unauthorised transfers. Block and Cash App Investing denied wrongdoing.[7][8]
The CFPB ordered Block to pay up to US$175 million: at least US$75 million and up to US$120 million to customers, plus a US$55 million penalty. It said Block used weak security and didn’t properly investigate unauthorised transactions.[9][10]
48 state financial regulators fined Block US$80 million after finding Cash App fell short of anti-money-laundering rules. Block agreed to an independent review of its compliance programme and to fix what it finds.[11]

Breaches and security flaws

  • : Block disclosed that a former employee downloaded Cash App Investing reports in December 2021 with names and brokerage account numbers for about 8.2 million customers. Passwords, Social Security numbers and bank details were not included.[12]

Scams that use Cash App

Fake Cash App support
Someone posing as Cash App support asks for your sign-in code or PIN, a ‘test’ payment, or a remote-access app like AnyDesk. Cash App says its support never asks for these; stop and use support inside the app.[13]
Money flips
A stranger, often on social media, promises to multiply your money and shows fake payment screenshots as ‘proof’. There is no investment behind it; the money you send is simply taken.[14]
Fake giveaways and prizes
A message says you’ve won money but must first send a small ‘processing’ fee. Cash App says real giveaways come only from its verified accounts and never ask for a payment, sign-in code or PIN.[13][14]
The ‘accidental’ payment
A stranger sends you money, says it was a mistake and asks you to send it back. The original may be stolen and later reversed. Don’t send a new payment; ask them to cancel it or refund the original.[14]
Pay-first sales and rentals
A seller of a puppy, tickets or a flat asks for payment up front, often below market price and in a hurry, then disappears. Cash App payments are instant and usually can’t be cancelled.[13][14]
Romance and investment scams
Someone you’ve only met online builds trust, then asks for money for a crisis or a ‘platform’ with impressive returns. Cash App’s advice: don’t send money to a love interest you haven’t met in person.[13][14]

What to do

In order, with the place to find each one in Cash App.

  1. Turn on Security Lock.In the profile section of Cash App, turn on Security Lock so every payment needs your passcode, Touch ID or Face ID.[15][2]
  2. Turn on payment notifications. In the profile section, turn on text or email notifications so you hear about every Cash App payment. Cash App also sends alerts for sign-ins and account changes.[15][2]
  3. Log out devices you don’t use.Tap Profile → Your Devices, choose any device you don’t recognise or no longer use, and tap Log out device.[15]
  4. Lock or hide your Cash App Card.Open the Card tab, select the card and switch off Enable Card to pause it. Switch off Show Cash App Card Info to hide the card number.[15]
  5. Opt out of ads for other brands.Go to Account & Settings → Privacy to opt out of Cash App using your shopping and card activity to show you ads for other brands.[3]
  6. Secure the email on your account.Turn on two-factor authentication for the email linked to Cash App. An unexpected sign-in code by email may mean someone is trying to get into your account.[15]
  7. For a teen, allow approved contacts only.In Family, set a sponsored teen account’s contact permissions to Approved contacts only, and turn on notifications for each purchase, transfer and deposit.[16]

When not to use it

  • Buying from strangers, or paying for anything promised later, like a puppy or a lease. Payments are usually final, and business purchases follow the seller’s refund policy, not Cash App’s.[13][1]
  • Sending money to someone you’ve only met online, especially a love interest, an ‘investment’ contact or anyone promising to multiply your money.[13][14]
  • Sending bitcoin to people you don’t know: Cash App’s terms say fraudulent bitcoin transactions may mean losing it with no recourse.[1]
  • Returning an ‘accidental’ payment from a stranger as a new payment. Ask them to cancel it, or use the refund option on the original payment.[14]

What HARD couldn’t verify

Claims you may see elsewhere that HARD couldn’t confirm from a primary source on 7 Nov 2026, so they aren’t in the record above.

  • Reports that CFPB refund cheques began reaching Cash App users on 8 June 2026 come from news and claims websites; HARD could not confirm this on a CFPB or Block page.
  • Reports that the US$15 million class settlement has started paying claimants come from news sites; the official settlement website would not load.
