Adobe Acrobat Reader

From Mac apps, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the Adobe Acrobat Reader app for Mac. For every app, see Mac apps.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free app for reading, printing, commenting on and signing PDFs, and filling in PDF forms. It’s made by Adobe, based in the United States.

Criminals have used its name in fake downloads or scams, so get it only from get.adobe.com.

What it is

People use Acrobat Reader to read documents, print PDFs, add comments and complete forms. Reading, filling in forms and adding your signature are free. Some other tools require a paid subscription.

Reader can read the documents you open and save your completed forms and comments. Its online services let you store documents with Adobe and share them with other people.

Adobe supplies Reader through its own website and maintains it with security updates. Serious flaws have affected the Mac version, including one used in attacks in April 2026. Adobe recommends keeping it updated.

Who makes it

Adobe is a publicly traded software company founded in 1982 and based in San Jose, California. Its legal name is Adobe Inc.. Its website is adobe.com.

Adobe makes other software with flaws that attackers have used. Its page in Companies lists them.

Is it the real one?

Every Mac app carries a signature from the developer who made it. Apple checks who the developer is before handing out the certificate, and macOS refuses to open an app whose signature has been tampered with.

HARD hasn’t yet recorded the signature on a real copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Its Mac app shows who signed the copy you have.

Its bundle ID, the name macOS knows it by, is com.adobe.Reader. Download it only from get.adobe.com, not from an ad or a link someone sends you.

Fakes. In March 2024, AhnLab reported PDF lures linking to fake Adobe Reader installers that stole information. That campaign used Windows executable files.

What it connects to

In normal use, Adobe Acrobat Reader talks to these places on the internet. A firewall that asks before apps connect, like the one in HARD’s Mac app, will show them.
