Adobe Acrobat

From Mac apps, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the Adobe Acrobat app for Mac. For every app, see Mac apps.

Adobe Acrobat is an app for creating, editing, converting, signing and sharing PDF documents. It’s made by Adobe, based in the United States.

Criminals have used its name in fake downloads or scams, so get it only from adobe.com.

What it is

People use Acrobat to edit PDFs, combine pages, fill in forms and request signatures. It can also turn scanned documents into searchable text. The tools available depend on the version and licence.

Acrobat accesses documents you open and folders you allow it to use. Adobe says opening a local PDF does not automatically upload it to its cloud. Cloud storage, sharing and questions asked through AI Assistant can send document content to Adobe’s servers.

Acrobat is Adobe’s own document software, distributed through its website. It has had serious security flaws, including one exploited in attacks in April 2026. Adobe recommends installing the latest security updates.

Who makes it

Adobe is a publicly traded software company founded in 1982 and headquartered in San Jose, California. Its legal name is Adobe Inc.. Its website is adobe.com.

Adobe makes other software with flaws that attackers have used. Its page in Companies lists them.

Is it the real one?

Every Mac app carries a signature from the developer who made it. Apple checks who the developer is before handing out the certificate, and macOS refuses to open an app whose signature has been tampered with.

HARD hasn’t yet recorded the signature on a real copy of Adobe Acrobat. Its Mac app shows who signed the copy you have.

Its bundle ID, the name macOS knows it by, is com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro. Download it only from adobe.com, not from an ad or a link someone sends you.

Fakes. In September 2023, K7 Labs reported a cracked-software site offering Acrobat Pro for Mac that led users to downloads containing Pirrit adware.

What it connects to

In normal use, Adobe Acrobat talks to these places on the internet. A firewall that asks before apps connect, like the one in HARD’s Mac app, will show them.
