Harvest

From Mac apps, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the Harvest app for Mac. For every app, see Mac apps.

Harvest records time spent on work projects and syncs it with an online timesheet. It’s made by Harvest, based in Italy.

What it is

People use Harvest to record hours worked for clients or projects. The Mac app provides timers, manual time entries and favourite tasks. The wider service offers reports and invoicing. An account and internet connection are required.

The app can detect when the Mac is idle and offer to remove that time from a running timer. You can change or disable idle detection in its preferences. Its App Store privacy declaration also lists identifiers, usage information and diagnostic data.

Harvest is an established work service available from its official website and the Mac App Store. Harvest says its service data is stored in the United States and encrypted in transit. Staff access for troubleshooting is restricted, logged and monitored.

Who makes it

Harvest began in 2006 as a time tracking service and is now operated by a company owned by Bending Spoons. Its legal name is Bending Spoons Operations S.p.A.. Its website is getharvest.com.

Is it the real one?

Every Mac app carries a signature from the developer who made it. Apple checks who the developer is before handing out the certificate, and macOS refuses to open an app whose signature has been tampered with.

The real Harvest is signed by Harvest, Apple team ID 68MH8658M5, or by the App Store for copies installed from there. A copy signed by anyone else isn’t from Harvest. HARD’s Mac app checks this for you; to check by hand, open Terminal and run codesign -dv "/Applications/Harvest.app", and look for that TeamIdentifier.

Its bundle ID, the name macOS knows it by, is com.getharvest.harvestxapp or com.getharvest.harvestx. Download it only from getharvest.com or the Mac App Store, not from an ad or a link someone sends you.
