Adobe Lightroom Classic

From Mac apps, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the Adobe Lightroom Classic app for Mac. For every app, see Mac apps.

Adobe Lightroom Classic is a desktop app for organising, editing and printing photos stored on your Mac or external drives. It’s made by Adobe, based in the United States.

Criminals have used its name in fake downloads or scams, so get it only from adobe.com.

What it is

Lightroom Classic helps people sort photo collections, adjust colour and exposure, and prepare pictures for sharing or printing. It stores editing instructions separately, so ordinary edits leave the original photo unchanged. Adobe supplies it through a paid subscription.

It needs access to folders and drives containing your photos. Adobe recommends Full Disk Access if ordinary folder permissions do not resolve access problems. Optional cloud syncing uploads smaller photo previews and editing details; originals arriving from Lightroom on other devices can be downloaded to the Mac.

This is Adobe's desktop photography software, supplied through Creative Cloud. Adobe publishes security fixes for it. The official download below is separate from unofficial sites offering cracked copies.

Who makes it

Adobe is a publicly traded software company founded in 1982 and based in San Jose, California. Its legal name is Adobe Inc.. Its website is adobe.com.

Adobe makes other software with flaws that attackers have used. Its page in Companies lists them.

Is it the real one?

Every Mac app carries a signature from the developer who made it. Apple checks who the developer is before handing out the certificate, and macOS refuses to open an app whose signature has been tampered with.

HARD hasn’t yet recorded the signature on a real copy of Adobe Lightroom Classic. Its Mac app shows who signed the copy you have.

Its bundle ID, the name macOS knows it by, is com.adobe.LightroomClassicCC7 or com.adobe.Lightroom6 or com.adobe.Lightroom5 or com.adobe.Lightroom4. Download it only from adobe.com, not from an ad or a link someone sends you.

Fakes. In September 2023, K7 Labs reported a Mac crack site advertising Lightroom alongside other apps and distributing Pirrit adware through its downloads.

What it connects to

In normal use, Adobe Lightroom Classic talks to these places on the internet. A firewall that asks before apps connect, like the one in HARD’s Mac app, will show them.

Full Disk AccessAdobe recommends this broader access if photo access problems continue after granting folder permissions.
Screen RecordingAdobe documents this optional permission on macOS Catalina for picking colours outside Lightroom Classic with the eyedropper.
