Vivaldi
Vivaldi is a web browser with customisable tabs, ad and tracker blocking, and built-in email and calendar tools. It’s made by Vivaldi Technologies, based in Norway.
What it is
Vivaldi opens websites and lets you organise tabs into groups or view pages side by side. It also includes email, calendar, notes and news feed tools. The Snapshot version is a test build for upcoming changes.
It handles the pages you visit, information you enter and files you download. It can store browsing history, cookies and saved passwords in its local profile. Websites can request camera and microphone access for calls.
Vivaldi publishes security updates for the browser and its Chromium engine. Its privacy policy says the company cannot access your locally stored browsing history. It does receive a daily user-count message containing an installation ID and basic device details.
Who makes it
Vivaldi Technologies is an employee-owned browser company founded in 2013 and headquartered in Norway. Its legal name is Vivaldi Technologies AS. Its website is vivaldi.com.
Is it the real one?
Every Mac app carries a signature from the developer who made it. Apple checks who the developer is before handing out the certificate, and macOS refuses to open an app whose signature has been tampered with.
HARD hasn’t yet recorded the signature on a real copy of Vivaldi. Its Mac app shows who signed the copy you have.
Its bundle ID, the name macOS knows it by, is com.vivaldi.Vivaldi or com.vivaldi.Vivaldi.snapshot. Download it only from vivaldi.com, not from an ad or a link someone sends you.
What it connects to
In normal use, Vivaldi talks to these places on the internet. A firewall that asks before apps connect, like the one in HARD’s Mac app, will show them.
| Address | Why |
|---|---|
update.googleapis.com | Checks for browser component updates. |
clients2.google.com | Checks for browser component updates. |
redirector.gvt1.com | Downloads components and spelling dictionaries. |
safebrowsing.google.com | Checks for dangerous websites and downloads. |
login.vivaldi.net | Signs in when you enable Sync. |
bifrost.vivaldi.com | Synchronises browser data when Sync is enabled. |
mtalk.google.com | Delivers notifications from websites using Google's messaging service. |
What it can see
macOS asks you before an app can use these. You can change them any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
| Permission | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Camera | Lets websites you approve use the camera for video calls. |
| Microphone | Lets websites you approve use the microphone for calls. |
| Screen Recording | Allows screen sharing through websites, such as during a video call. |
