This article is about a flaw in Realtek AP-Router SDK. For every flaw being used in attacks, see Exploited flaws; for Realtek’s, see Realtek flaws being used in attacks.

CVE-2021-35395 is a security flaw in Realtek AP-Router SDK. Attackers can run their own code on Realtek AP-Router SDK. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added it to its catalog of flaws known to be used in attacks on 3 Nov 2021.[1]

Realtek AP-Router SDK is in things households have, such as phones, computers, browsers and everyday apps, so the fix matters at home as much as at work. Realtek has published a fix or advice.

Description

CISA calls it a buffer overflow in Realtek AP-Router SDK. In its words: “Realtek AP-Router SDK HTTP web server boa contains a buffer overflow vulnerability due to unsafe copies of some overly long parameters submitted in the form that lead to denial-of-service (DoS).”[1]

The CVE record adds: “Realtek Jungle SDK version v2.x up to v3.4.14B provides an HTTP web server exposing a management interface that can be used to configure the access point. Two versions of this management interface exists: one based on Go-Ahead named webs and another based on Boa named boa. Both of them are affected by these vulnerabilities. Specifically, these binaries are vulnerable to the following issues: - stack buffer overflow in formRebootCheck due to unsafe copy of submit-url parameter - stack buffer overflow in formWsc due to unsafe copy of submit-url parameter - stack buffer overflow in formWlanMultipleAP due to unsafe copy of submit-url parameter - stack buffer overflow in formWlSiteSurvey due to unsafe copy of ifname parameter - stack buffer overflow in formStaticDHCP due to unsafe copy of hostname parameter - stack buffer overflow in formWsc due to unsafe copy of…”[2]

The underlying weakness is improper input validation (CWE-20), heap buffer overflow (CWE-122), in MITRE’s list of common software weaknesses.

It scores 9.8 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System, which rates it critical, scored by NVD using CVSS 3.1.[2]

Affected versions

NVD’s record doesn’t list version ranges for it; Realtek’s advisory has them[3]. CISA names the product as Realtek AP-Router SDK.

Every device with Realtek AP-Router SDK needs the update.

Exploitation

CISA added it to its catalog of known exploited vulnerabilities on 3 Nov 2021, 79 days after it was made public. CISA lists a flaw only when it has reliable evidence of it being exploited, and gave US federal agencies until 17 Nov 2021 to fix it.[1]

FIRST’s Exploit Prediction Scoring System, which estimates how likely a flaw is to be used in attacks in the next 30 days from what it sees across the internet, puts it at 98%. That’s in the top 1% of the flaws it scores.[4]

CISA assesses it as automatable: attackers can run it against many targets at once.

CISA doesn’t say who was attacked, or how.

Fix

Realtek has published a fix or advice.[3] CISA’s required action: “Apply updates per vendor instructions.”[1]

  1. Update Realtek AP-Router SDK now.Install the latest update from Realtek on every device that has it, and restart when asked. Then turn on automatic updates, so the next fix arrives on its own.
  2. If there’s no update, stop using it.CISA’s advice when a flaw being used in attacks has no fix is to stop using the product until it does.
