Should you update to LibreOffice 25.8.5?

From LibreOffice updates, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about one LibreOffice release. For the latest version, see LibreOffice updates.

Yes, today. LibreOffice 25.8.5 is a security update The Document Foundation released on 21 Aug 2026 for Mac, Windows and Linux. It fixes 1 security flaw.[1] One of them is already being used in attacks.

It is the newest LibreOffice 25.8 release, so it’s the one to have.

Should you update?

Yes, today. One of the flaws it fixes is already being used in attacks. Every security update closes holes that become public the moment it ships, so the risk of staying on the old version only grows. Waiting a week to see if others hit problems is a common habit; with a security update it’s the wrong trade.

Is LibreOffice 25.8.5 safe to install?

Yes. It’s The Document Foundation’s own security release, and updates rarely go wrong; a backup makes it painless if one does. The one unsafe way to get it is from a link: The Document Foundation never sends updates by email, text or pop-up, so install it only from libreoffice.org/download.

What it fixes

The Document Foundation lists 1 security flaw.[1] The Document Foundation doesn’t rate them by severity. They are:

FlawSeverityWhat The Document Foundation calls it
CVE-2022-30190Not ratedHyperlinks to Microsoft shell handler schemes are no longer passed to the system

Used in attacks

This fix closes a flaw that attackers were already using before the update came out, either on CISA’s list of flaws being used in attacks or in The Document Foundation’s own words.[2]

How to update, and how long it takes

About five minutes. Close LibreOffice before installing.

  1. Open LibreOffice and choose Help → Check for Updates…If it offers a new version, download it from libreoffice.org.
  2. Close LibreOffice and run the download. It installs over the old version; your documents and settings stay.

To check it worked: Help → About LibreOffice (LibreOffice → About LibreOffice on a Mac) shows the version. It should say 25.8.5 or later.

Older devices

The same day, The Document Foundation released LibreOffice 26.2.1 (1 security flaw) for devices that stay on an older version. Each fixes the same holes where they apply.
