Is DHgate safe?

This article is about the DHgate shopping app. For other apps, see Is it safe?.

Be careful: DHgate is a real wholesale marketplace with refunds, but the US government lists it as a notorious market for counterfeits, and your data is stored in China.

DHgate is a genuine Chinese business-to-business marketplace that mostly sells to buyers outside China. It offers refunds if an order doesn’t ship or arrive by the estimated date, and most wrong items can be reported within 21 days of receipt.

The main risk is fakes. The US Trade Representative named DHgate on its 2024 and 2025 lists of notorious markets for counterfeiting, while noting its efforts to improve. Its terms also say sellers, not DHgate, are responsible for product quality and safety.

DHgate is run by companies in the Dunhuang Group, led by Digital Trading Science & Technology (Beijing) Co. Ltd. Its privacy policy says your personal information is stored on its servers in China.[1][2]

The real risks

What DHgate itself says it collects, what regulators and courts have found, its security record and the scams that borrow its name. Each line links to the page it comes from.

What it collects

From DHgate’s own privacy policy:

  • An email address and password, or a social media login, to create an account; optionally your name, phone number, gender, date of birth and a profile photo.[1]
  • Billing address and bank account details for payments, plus your name, phone number, delivery address and order history.[1]
  • Text and images from your chats with sellers, and records of after-sales and dispute conversations.[1]
  • Device details such as hardware serial number, MAC address and device ID, your IP address, language and what you browse on DHgate.[1]
  • On Android, your location and SIM card data, including your contacts list, but only if you choose to share them.[1]
  • Optional extras for personalised offers, such as income bracket, family birthdays and anniversaries, which it uses to profile your preferences.[1]

App store label. DHgate’s Apple App Store label says identifiers are used to track you across other companies’ apps. Data linked to you includes purchases, precise location, contact info, search history and identifiers. Photos, usage data and diagnostics are not linked to you. Rated 13+.[3]

Regulators and courts

Fines, orders, investigations and lawsuits, newest first. A lawsuit is what the side bringing it alleges until a court decides.

WhenWhat happened
The US Trade Representative again named DHgate on its Notorious Markets List. Stakeholders reported counterfeits easy to find in search and weak deterrence of repeat sellers, while welcoming its now-permanent programme for brand owners’ complaints.[4]
The US Trade Representative named DHgate on its 2024 Notorious Markets List. It noted DHgate’s AI screening and seller checks but said stakeholders still reported a high volume of counterfeits.[5][6]

Changes that matter

  • : DHgate’s updated privacy policy says personal information is stored on its servers in China, and that China is not recognised by the European Commission as giving full data protection.[1]

Scams that use DHgate

Fake brand listings
Sellers of counterfeits reportedly avoid DHgate’s filters by misspelling brand names and blurring logos in photos. A big brand at a tiny price is the tell.[4]
Anyone asking for your password
DHgate says no customer service staff or other representative will ask for your password. A message asking for it is a scam.[1]

What HARD couldn’t verify

Claims you may see elsewhere that HARD couldn’t confirm from a primary source on 7 Nov 2026, so they aren’t in the record above.

  • HARD did not find a DHgate page describing scams that use its name, or a regulator fine against DHgate, so neither is listed here.
