Is TikTok Shop safe?
Safe to use with care: buying through TikTok Shop’s own checkout comes with returns and a 90-day money-back guarantee; links that take you outside the app do not.
TikTok Shop is a real marketplace, not a scam. Most items can be returned within 30 days, damaged or faulty items are covered for 90 days, and refunds go back to your original payment method. Sellers must verify their identity before they can sell.
The real risks are uneven third-party sellers, fakes slipping through, and scammers who move you off the app to pay. Anything you pay for outside TikTok Shop’s checkout is not protected.
TikTok Shop is the shopping part of the TikTok app. Independent sellers list the goods; TikTok Shop runs checkout, payments, returns and its money-back guarantee. The January 2026 US joint venture says e-commerce stays with TikTok global’s US companies.[1][2][3]

What it collects
From TikTok Shop’s own privacy policy:
- Purchase details: what you buy, payment card, billing, delivery and contact details, and your purchase history.[2]
- Messages you send to sellers through shopping chat; TikTok’s policy says it scans and reviews messages.[2]
- Your order details are shared with the seller and their service providers, and payments go through processors such as PayPal and Stripe.[2]
- Payment confirmations and delivery updates that sellers and delivery companies send back to TikTok.[2]
App store label. TikTok Shop sits inside the TikTok app. Apple’s App Store label for TikTok lists purchases and financial info among the data linked to you, and contact info and identifiers as used to track you.[4]
Changes that matter
- : TikTok Shop said it declined 1.4 million seller applications in the first half of 2025 and blocked 99.7 per cent of unsafe or counterfeit listings before they went live. These are its own figures.[5][6]
- : The new US joint venture took over TikTok’s US data and safety, but said e-commerce, advertising and marketing stay with TikTok global’s US companies.[1]
Scams that use TikTok Shop
- A seller asks you to pay somewhere else
- A link, QR code or website to pay, put down a deposit or cover shipping elsewhere is a red flag. TikTok Shop says it never asks you to pay outside the platform.[7]
- “Click to verify your info” links
- Messages with official-looking logos and urgent wording, such as “click this link to get paid”, lead to fake sites that ask for your login or card details.[7]
- Outside shop links from creators
- Some sellers and creators link to their own websites. TikTok Shop says it gives no protection for purchases made there.[8]
- Fake customer service calls
- TikTok Shop says its customer service won’t ring you out of the blue. If someone calls claiming to be them, hang up and contact TikTok Shop in the app.[9][10]
- Requests for passwords or codes
- TikTok Shop says it will never ask for your password, verification codes or other sensitive details. A message that does is likely phishing.[8]
- Lookalike shop websites
- Before you add to cart anywhere, check you are on the real site. Misspellings, odd characters and strange formatting are warning signs.[9]

What to do
In order, with the place to find each one in TikTok Shop or on its site.
- Turn on two-step verification.Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → 2-step verification. Pick at least two of phone, email or an authenticator app, then tap Turn on.[11]
- Add a payment PIN or Face ID.In the shop, tap Shop → Payment → Manage payment methods → the gear icon → PIN management, and turn on a PIN or Face ID check for each payment.[12]
- Check the return rules before you buy.On the product page, open Shipping & returns. Return windows vary by seller and item, and final-sale items can’t be returned.[13]
- Request a return or refund.Profile → Your orders → Orders → pick the order → Request return or refund. Most items have 30 days from delivery; damaged or faulty items are covered for 90 days.[14][13]
- Report an unauthorised charge within 60 days.Contact TikTok Shop from the product page within 60 days. Payment Assurance covers saved cards, TikTok Shop Balance, PayPal and Venmo, but not Apple Pay or Google Pay.[15]
- Report a dodgy product or seller.On the product, tap the three dots → Report, choose the problem and tap Submit. For videos or LIVEs, press and hold, then Report.[10]
- Get help with an order.Scroll the bar under the search box to Help, describe the problem, pick an issue and tap Contact us. Live agents work business hours; the help centre runs all day.[16]
When not to use it
- Any deal where the seller wants payment, a deposit or shipping fee outside TikTok Shop’s checkout.[7][8]
- Buying for under-18s on their own account: teens can’t buy or sell on TikTok Shop.[17]
- Final-sale or non-returnable items, such as food, supplements, car parts or collectibles, if you’re not sure about them.[13]

Yes. It is TikTok’s own marketplace, with checkout, returns and a money-back guarantee run by TikTok Shop. Sellers are independent businesses, so quality varies; check reviews and look for Official Shop, Gold Star or Silver Star badges.
Is TikTok Shop safe to buy from?
Yes, if you pay through TikTok Shop’s own checkout. Most items can be returned within 30 days, damaged or faulty items are covered for 90 days, and lost parcels are refunded automatically. If a seller or creator sends you elsewhere to pay, you lose that protection.
Is TikTok Shop a scam?
No, but scammers use it. The common tricks are asking you to pay outside the app, fake “verify your info” links, and calls pretending to be customer service. TikTok Shop says it never asks you to pay elsewhere or for your password or codes.
Can I get my money back on TikTok Shop?
Usually. Request a return or refund from Your orders. Refunds go to your original payment method and usually take 3 to 10 business days. Some sellers use outside returns services such as Narvar, Happy Returns or Loop, which is normal.
Does TikTok Shop sell fake products?
It bans counterfeits, verifies sellers, runs test buys and requires certificates of authenticity for pre-owned luxury goods. It says it blocked 99.7 per cent of unsafe or counterfeit listings before they went live in early 2025, but some can still get through.
