CVE-2010-0840

From Exploited flaws, HARD’s guide to the flaws being used in attacks · Checked
This article is about a flaw in Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE). For every flaw being used in attacks, see Exploited flaws; for Oracle’s, see Oracle flaws being used in attacks.

CVE-2010-0840 is a security flaw in Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which runs apps on computers and servers. Attackers can run their own code on Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added it to its catalog of flaws known to be used in attacks on 25 May 2022.[1]

Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is in things households have, such as phones, computers, browsers and everyday apps, so the fix matters at home as much as at work.

Description

CISA calls it a JRE unspecified in Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE). In its words: “Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in Java SE component allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via Unknown vectors.”[1]

The CVE record adds: “Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment component in Oracle Java SE and Java for Business 6 Update 18, 5.0 Update 23, and 1.4.2_25 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the March 2010 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a reliable researcher that this is related to improper checks when executing privileged methods in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) an untrusted object that extends the trusted class but has not modified a certain method, or (2) "a similar trust issue with interfaces," aka "Trusted Methods Chaining Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."”[2]

It scores 9.8 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System, which rates it critical, scored by NVD using CVSS 3.1.[2]

Affected versions

NVD’s record doesn’t list version ranges for it. CISA names the product as Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Every device with Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) needs the update.

Exploitation

CISA added it to its catalog of known exploited vulnerabilities on 25 May 2022, 4,437 days after it was made public. CISA lists a flaw only when it has reliable evidence of it being exploited, and gave US federal agencies until 15 Jun 2022 to fix it.[1]

FIRST’s Exploit Prediction Scoring System, which estimates how likely a flaw is to be used in attacks in the next 30 days from what it sees across the internet, puts it at 96%. That’s in the top 1% of the flaws it scores.[3]

CISA assesses it as automatable: attackers can run it against many targets at once.

CISA doesn’t say who was attacked, or how.

Fix

CISA’s required action: “Apply updates per vendor instructions.”[1]

  1. Update Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) now.Install the latest update from Oracle on every device that has it, and restart when asked. Then turn on automatic updates, so the next fix arrives on its own.
  2. If there’s no update, stop using it.CISA’s advice when a flaw being used in attacks has no fix is to stop using the product until it does.
