This article is about a flaw in Oracle Java SE. For every flaw being used in attacks, see Exploited flaws; for Oracle’s, see Oracle flaws being used in attacks.

CVE-2015-2590 is a security flaw in Oracle Java SE, which runs apps on computers and servers. Attackers can run their own code on Oracle Java SE. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added it to its catalog of flaws known to be used in attacks on 3 Mar 2022.[1]

Oracle Java SE is in things households have, such as phones, computers, browsers and everyday apps, so the fix matters at home as much as at work.

Description

CISA calls it an and java SE embedded remote code execution in Oracle Java SE. In its words: “An unspecified vulnerability exists within Oracle Java Runtime Environment that allows an attacker to perform remote code execution.”[1]

The CVE record adds: “Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Java SE 6u95, 7u80, and 8u45, and Java SE Embedded 7u75 and 8u33 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors related to Libraries, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-4732.”[2]

It scores 9.8 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System, which rates it critical, scored by NVD using CVSS 3.1.[2]

Affected versions

NVD’s record doesn’t list version ranges for it. CISA names the product as Oracle Java SE.

Every device with Oracle Java SE needs the update.

Exploitation

CISA added it to its catalog of known exploited vulnerabilities on 3 Mar 2022, 2,422 days after it was made public. CISA lists a flaw only when it has reliable evidence of it being exploited, and gave US federal agencies until 24 Mar 2022 to fix it.[1]

FIRST’s Exploit Prediction Scoring System, which estimates how likely a flaw is to be used in attacks in the next 30 days from what it sees across the internet, puts it at 25%. That’s in the top 3% of the flaws it scores.[3]

CISA assesses it as automatable: attackers can run it against many targets at once.

CISA doesn’t say who was attacked, or how.

Fix

CISA’s required action: “Apply updates per vendor instructions.”[1]

  1. Update Oracle Java SE now.Install the latest update from Oracle on every device that has it, and restart when asked. Then turn on automatic updates, so the next fix arrives on its own.
  2. If there’s no update, stop using it.CISA’s advice when a flaw being used in attacks has no fix is to stop using the product until it does.
