Venmo scams: Venmo won’t ask you to pay to verify

From Scams, in the HARD wiki · Updated

A call or text from “Venmo” asking for the code sent to your phone or for money to verify your account, or a stranger who sends you money “by mistake” and asks for it back, is a scam.

Venmo says it never asks for remote access, never asks you to send money to verify your account, and that you should never give anyone the verification code sent to your phone. The “mistaken payment” is usually made with a stolen card: you send real money back, then the original payment is reversed.

Venmo is for US users. The same tricks run through payment apps everywhere.
