Warner Music Group data breach settlement

From Settlements, in the HARD wiki · Updated
This article is about the class action settlement over the Warner Music Group data breach. For every settlement, see Settlements.

Yes. The Warner Music Group data breach settlement is real: a $1,250,000 class action settlement in federal court, Southern District of New York, run by EisnerAmper. Claims are open until 22 January 2027, on wmgdatasettlement.com only.

The court granted preliminary approval (order filed August 20, 2026) and the administrator lists a claims deadline of January 22, 2027.

Is it real?

Yes. The case is In re: Warner Music Group Data Breach, case number 1:20-cv-07473-PGG, in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The court appointed EisnerAmper to run it, and its only official site is wmgdatasettlement.com.

How the real notice reached people. Direct notice by email to everyone Warner had an email address for; otherwise, or if the email bounced, a Postcard Notice with a postage-prepaid claim form. The postcard carries a Notice ID and Confirmation Code, and the claim form asks for the Settlement Claim/Notice ID from the email or postcard. Reminder emails go to non-claimants about 30 days before the deadline. The site says it is the only authorized website for this litigation; no other scam warning is published.

To tell a real message from a scam:

  1. The only official site is wmgdatasettlement.com.Type it into your browser yourself rather than tapping a link. Claim pages on news and lawyer-advertising sites, and lookalike addresses, are not the administrator.
  2. Filing costs nothing. No real settlement charges a fee to file a claim or to release a payment. Anyone asking for one is running a scam.
  3. Nobody needs your passwords. The administrator never asks for your Warner Music Group password, your online banking login or a code texted to you. Payment details go only into the claim form on wmgdatasettlement.com.
  4. Check by phone. If you aren’t sure a message is real, call the administrator on 1-844-372-1010, the number on wmgdatasettlement.com, not one in the message.

The breach, and what to do today

Between April 25, 2020 and August 5, 2020, unauthorized third parties compromised several e-commerce websites run by or for Warner Music Group's subsidiaries (record-label and merchandise stores) and may have taken shoppers' payment card information. The attackers are not named in the settlement papers.

What was exposed: payment card information; personal information shared during card purchases (the complaint calls it PII).

A settlement pays for what already happened. The data is still out there, so do these now:

  1. Watch your statements.Look for small charges you don’t recognise and report them to your bank. Ask for a new card if a full card number leaked.
  2. Put a PIN on your phone account.Ask your mobile provider for a port-out PIN or number lock, so no one can move your number to their SIM.
  3. Distrust messages about Warner Music Group and this settlement.Breach data is used to make scam messages personal enough to believe, for years afterwards. Go to the company or the official site yourself.

To see which other breaches your email address is in, search it on Have I Been Pwned, then read Breaches.
